Isfahan Jame' mosque is a stunning illustration of the evolution of mosque architecture over 12 centuries. It is the oldest edifice of its type in Iran and a prototype for later mosque designs throughout central Asia. Isfahan Jame' mosque is of high importance in terms of Iran's architectural history.The Jame' mosque of Isfahan is the grand,congregational mosque of Isfahan city within Isfahan province,Iran. The mosque is the result of continual construction,reconstruction,additions and renovations on the site from around 771 to the end of the 20th century. It is UNESCO world Heritage since 2012.Isfahan mosque is a museum of evolution of Persian architecture during the fourteen centuries of Islamic history. 117273_993  Here is a sacred palace that was a fire temple of the Sassanid period, then a simple mosque based there.The complex,extending over 20,000 square meters,is the first Islamic building that adapted the four-iwan structure of Sassanid palaces to Islamic religious architectural.It's double-shelled ribbed domes represent an architectural innovation that inspired architects throughout the region. The qibla iwan on the southern side of the mosque was vaulted with muqarnas during the 13th century.Muqarnas are nich-like cells. Isfahan Jame' mosque is an outstandin example of innovation in architectural adaption and technology applied during the restoration and expansion of the former building during

the Seljuq era which has been further enlarged during Islamic period with

addition of high-quality extensions and decorations



1_uur3dtb0fqfujpgwe4mf  Construction under the Seljuqs included the addition of two brick domed chambers,for which the mosque is renowned. It is no exaggeration to say that this is one of the most completed dome built of brick domes on earth. Iwan were also added in stages under the Seljuqs giving the mosque its current four-iwan form, atype which subsequently became prevalent in Iran and the rest of the Islamic world.

   The south dome was built to house the Mihrab in 1086-87 by Nizam ol Mulk, the famous vizier of Malik Shah and was larger than any dome known at its time. The north dome was constructed a year later by Nizam ol Mulk's rival Taj al Mulk. The function of this domed chamber is uncertain, also it was situated along the north-south axis, it was located outside the bouderies of the mosque. The huge dome of the mosque is 52 meters, the height of 48 meters and the minaret height is 42 meters.

Interestingly,the reflection of the sound is in the great southern dome of the mosque.








The dome was certainly built as adirect riposte to earlier south dome and successfully so claiming it's place as a masterpiece in Persian architecture for its structural clarity and geometric balance.

Arabesques,interlacing vines and calligraphy, leaves and lotus flowers are delicately incised upon the golden stucco surfaced this inspired Mihrab.

The beautiful and majestic head of the mosque is with mosaic tiles but the rest is decorated with clay tiles.
